Rotterdam Storage - Moved, Stored, Transported Back

Rotterdam is one of the cheapest cities we collect from. Our storage space sits in the Den Haag and Delft area, 25 to 30 kilometres away — about half an hour up the A13. A Rotterdam collection is usually 1.5 to 2 hours of van time, which is €73.50 to €98 at our normal €49 an hour, plus transport. On the same job in Amsterdam you would be paying nearly double, purely because of the drive.

Because you are close to it. The weekly storage rate is identical everywhere we collect — €15 for a room, €30 for a studio — but the van time is not, and the van time is where the money moves.

Rotterdam sits half an hour from our space on the A13. That puts a collection at the low end of what we charge: often barely above the 1.5-hour minimum of €73.50 if your things are ready when we arrive. The same collection from a city an hour further out costs 50 to 100 percent more before a single box is loaded.

A worked comparison. Storing one room for six weeks costs €90 whether you are in Rotterdam or anywhere else. What differs is getting it there and back — and on this route that is a short, cheap trip rather than a half-day expedition. It is the reason Rotterdam, Delft and Den Haag are where this service makes the most obvious financial sense.

Yes, and this is where being close actually matters. Because the space is half an hour away, a mid-storage retrieval is a short job rather than an all-day one — we can bring one or two items back on a separate trip at the normal €49 an hour with the 1.5-hour minimum.

The trick is telling us at collection which things you might want early. We keep those at the front of your lot so we are not digging through everything to reach a single box. Winter coats, a specific piece of paperwork, a desk chair you decided you did want after all — people ask for all of these.

Be realistic about it, though. If you know you will want access every couple of weeks, the retrieval trips add up and a self-storage unit you can walk into is cheaper. This works best when you need one unplanned retrieval, not a routine.

Faster than almost anywhere else we go, because of how Rotterdam is built.

Most of the city is post-war. Wide streets, modern blocks, lifts as standard, and parking that is usually within sight of the front door. Kralingen, Blijdorp, Noord, Hillegersberg, Prins Alexander and most of Zuid load quickly — the van gets close, the lift works, and a room's worth of belongings is on board in under an hour.

Two things that do slow it down. Delfshaven and the older pockets of the centre have narrower streets and some walk-up buildings, so allow more time there. And high-rise blocks often require you to book the service lift in advance — common in Zuid and around the Kop van Zuid. If your building has one, reserve the slot before you book the van and tell us the window, because a collection that arrives to find the lift unavailable is the one thing that turns a cheap job into an expensive one.

Everything is loaded at street level, if elevator is missing. Bring what you can down beforehand and take bed frames and desks apart; the driver can help with two or three heavier items.

€15 a week for a room load — a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe contents and 10 to 15 boxes. €30 a week for a studio or one-bedroom flat — bed, table, appliances and 20 to 30 boxes. Two-week minimum, no deposit, no admin fee, nothing to pay when your things come back out.

Erasmus exchange students. Rotterdam has one of the largest incoming exchange populations in the country through Erasmus University and RSM, and exchange dates almost never match housing dates. Students arriving in August or January, or leaving in December or June, routinely have a gap at one end.

Students moving between Kralingen and everywhere else. Kralingen is the student heartland and turns over constantly. A room ending before the next one starts is the most common message we get.

Erasmus MC staff and researchers on fixed contracts. Postdocs and medical staff on one- and two-year appointments, often leaving the country between posts and not ready to sell a flat's worth of furniture.

Port and logistics professionals between placements. Rotterdam's port economy runs on secondments and rotations, which produces exactly the sort of two-month gap this service exists for.

People renovating. Rotterdam has a lot of ongoing renovation in Zuid and the older north, and clearing a flat for three weeks is cheaper than working around the furniture.

Centrum, Kralingen, Delfshaven, Noord, Blijdorp, Hillegersberg, Katendrecht, Feijenoord, Charlois, Prins Alexander and the Kop van Zuid are all routine, and we also collect from Schiedam, Capelle aan den IJssel, Vlaardingen and Barendrecht.

The neighbourhood does not change the storage price and rarely changes the van time much either — Rotterdam is easier to drive a van around than most Dutch cities of its size.
