Moving is one of the most common things Dutch households do and one of the most overpriced. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 1.73 million people moved house within the Netherlands in 2023 — roughly 9.7 percent of the population, or about 144,000 people every month. The overwhelming majority of those were studio, room and apartment moves that fit comfortably in a single gesloten bestelbus. They do not need a four-person crew, a packing service, or a three-hour minimum booking. They need a van, a driver, and a fair hourly rate.

That is the entire proposition. A bestelbus met chauffeur — van and driver, street-level loading, transport, street-level unloading, if elevator is missing. No packing service or no disassembly services. You prepare; we transport. MoverMate operates as a van and driver transport service. The sequence is fixed and there are no variables hidden inside it:

The driver arrives at your pickup address in a clean, insured moving van. Your items are loaded from street level. The van drives to your destination. Your items are unloaded at street level. The street level applies if elevator is missing. That is the job.

Included: the van, the licensed driver, street-level loading and unloading, if elevator is missing and the drive itself.

Not included: packing materials, furniture disassembly, specialist handling, storage, or carrying items through hallways. Your belongings need to be packed, sealed, and brought down to the loading point, if elevator is missing before the driver arrives.

This scope is not a limitation we apologise for — it is the reason the price works. You do not subsidise services you are not using. For a studio, a student room, a one-bedroom flat, or a furniture transport run, a van and driver is precisely the correct amount of help, and anything more is money spent on capacity you will not touch.

The rate is €49 per hour for the van and the driver, with a minimum booking of 1.5 hours (€73.50). Transport costs is charged separately, calculated on the actual driving distance between your two addresses. There is no call-out fee, no weekend surcharge, and no intercity surcharge.

Four variables set your final price:

Time — from the driver's arrival until the last box is unloaded, billed by the hour after the 1.5-hour minimum

Distance — the kilometres driven between the two addresses, which determines fuel

Volume — how many cubic metres of belongings you have, which drives loading time

Preparation — whether your items are packed and waiting at street level, if elevator is missing or still being sorted when the van pulls up

You receive a written estimate before you confirm. Send both addresses, your preferred date, and a short description of what needs to move.

How this compares: full-service Dutch moving companies quote for a crew of two to four movers, a truck, packing labour, and materials, and typically apply a three-to-four-hour minimum booking. That model is genuinely the right one for a four-bedroom family home with a piano and a decade of accumulated furniture. It is a poor fit for a student room with fourteen boxes and a bed frame. A man with a van at €49 per hour exists for the second case, and we will tell you honestly if you are the first.

Local move within one city: 1.5–2 hours × €49 = €73.50–€98, excluding transportation costs.

Short intercity move (Amsterdam → Utrecht, Rotterdam → Den Haag): 2–3 hours × €49 = €98–€147, plus transportation costs

A van + driver is the right fit when:

Your belongings are already packed — you have boxes, bags, and furniture ready to load. You do not need someone to pack for you.

You are moving an apartment or studio — one to three rooms of belongings that fit in a single van load. This covers the vast majority of apartment moves in the Netherlands.

You want transparent, time-based pricing — you know what you are paying and why. No surprise charges, no minimum packages beyond 1.5 hours.

You need flexible scheduling — same-day, next-day, evenings, weekends. We work around your timeline, not the other way around.

You are moving between Dutch cities — the Netherlands is compact. Most intercity moves take 2–3 hours. A van + driver handles these efficiently without the overhead of a traditional mover.

You are an expat or international resident — you want a service that communicates in English, books via WhatsApp, and does not require navigating Dutch-language contracts or bureaucracy.

A van + driver is not the right fit when you need a full packing crew, multiple movers carrying heavy items through a building, specialist handling for pianos or antiques, or storage solutions. The single biggest factor in keeping your move fast and affordable is preparation. Here is what to do before the driver arrives:

Pack everything into boxes or bags. Tape boxes closed. Label if possible. Loose items take longer to load and increase the total time.

Disassemble furniture. Bed frames, desks, shelving units, tables with removable legs. Disassembled furniture loads faster and fits more efficiently in the van.

Move everything to the nearest accessible point. Stack boxes near the building entrance or as close to the van loading point as possible. The less distance between your items and the van, the faster loading goes.

Check parking and access. Can the van stop close to your building entrance? Is there a loading zone? Do you need a temporary parking arrangement? Share this information when booking so the driver can plan.

Have both locations ready. If you are moving to a new address, make sure you have the keys and access at the destination before the move starts.

If a driver is unlicensed, their insurance position when something breaks is at best unclear.
