North Holland is a province defined by its capital. Amsterdam dominates the population, the economy, and the moving market — but the province extends far beyond the A10 ring road. From the dunes of Zandvoort to the polders of West-Friesland, from Hilversum's media industry to Alkmaar's medieval cheese market, North Holland is a region of distinct cities and towns connected by frequent moves between them.

North Holland - The Province Where Amsterdam Sets the Pace

North Holland is the most internationally connected province in the Netherlands. Around 2.9 million people live here, and roughly 920,000 of them — nearly a third of the entire province — live in Amsterdam itself. The capital draws students, expats, and young professionals from across the country and the world, and that population pressure shapes how moves happen across the entire province.

What is distinctive about North Holland is the spillover effect. Amsterdam's housing market is the most expensive and competitive in the Netherlands. The result is constant outward migration to satellite cities and towns where housing is more affordable but commuting to Amsterdam remains practical. Amstelveen, Zaandam, Purmerend, Haarlem, and Hilversum (just over the border in Utrecht province but functionally part of the metropolitan region) all serve as housing alternatives for Amsterdam workers. Moves from Amsterdam to these surrounding cities — and back into Amsterdam from them — are the dominant pattern in our North Holland service.

Beyond the metropolitan ring, the province has its own distinct regions. The Zaanstreek (Zaandam, Zaanstad) preserves industrial heritage and produces consistent residential moves. West-Friesland (Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Medemblik) is a quieter region with rural character and historic harbours. The Kop van Noord-Holland (Alkmaar, Den Helder) anchors the northern part of the province with cheese-market tradition and naval history. Each contributes its own move patterns to what we handle.

The international population is the third defining feature. Amsterdam alone has around 200,000 international residents — by some measures the highest concentration of expats per capita in Europe. Add Haarlem's growing expat community, the international families in Amstelveen (drawn by the International School Amsterdam), and the media professionals in the broader Gooi-Amsterdam corridor, and you have a province where English-friendly moving service is essential rather than optional.

Cities and Towns We Cover Across North Holland

We provide moving services across the entire province. Major cities with dedicated service pages:

Amsterdam — the capital, the largest city, the most challenging moving environment in the Netherlands. Narrow canal-house staircases, restricted centre access, paid parking everywhere. Moving Service Amsterdam, Hilversum — formally in Noord-Holland's neighbouring province but functionally part of the metropolitan region. Media capital, Gooi character, expat-heavy. Moving Service Hilversum. Smaller cities and towns covered (no dedicated page): Haarlem, Amstelveen, Zaandam, Zaanstad, Purmerend, Hoorn, Alkmaar, Heerhugowaard, Den Helder, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Hilversum, Beverwijk, Heemskerk, Velsen, IJmuiden, Zandvoort, Bloemendaal, Heemstede, Aalsmeer, Uithoorn, Diemen, Weesp, Hoofddorp, Schiphol, Badhoevedorp, Volendam, Edam, Monnickendam, Bussum, Naarden, Laren, Blaricum, Huizen, and surrounding municipalities. Same service, same rate.

(Note: while Hilversum, Bussum, Naarden, Laren, and Blaricum are part of the broader Gooi region that crosses provincial boundaries, we treat them as part of the practical Amsterdam metropolitan service area for moving purposes.)

The Geography of Moving in North Holland

Unlike South Holland's tightly-packed cluster of cities, North Holland has a hub-and-spoke structure with Amsterdam at the centre. Most intercity moves involve Amsterdam as either origin or destination. Distances from Amsterdam:

Amsterdam → Haarlem: 25 min | Amsterdam → Amstelveen: 20 min | Amsterdam → Zaandam: 20 min | Amsterdam → Hoofddorp: 25 min | Amsterdam → Purmerend: 25 min | Amsterdam → Hilversum: 25 min | Amsterdam → Hoorn: 35 min | Amsterdam → Alkmaar: 40 min | Amsterdam → Den Helder: 1h 15 min

Inter-suburban routes (not through Amsterdam):

Haarlem ↔ Amstelveen: 30 min | Haarlem ↔ Alkmaar: 35 min | Zaandam ↔ Purmerend: 15 min | Hoorn ↔ Alkmaar: 30 min | Hilversum ↔ Amstelveen: 25 min

This geography matters for how moves are priced. A Haarlem-to-Amstelveen move involves driving around Amsterdam — fuel cost reflects the actual route, not the straight-line distance. We always calculate based on the realistic driving path.

How Moves Are Priced Across North Holland

The base rate is €49 per hour for the van and driver. Fuel costs are calculated separately based on actual driving distance. No regional surcharges. The rate is the same whether the move is within Amsterdam or between Alkmaar and Hoorn.

Determinants of the final price:

Total time from arrival until last item is unloaded

Distance between addresses (affects fuel cost)

Volume of items being moved

Access conditions — particularly relevant in Amsterdam given canal-house staircases and parking restrictions

Preparation — packed and ready vs still being organised

We provide a clear estimate before you confirm. No hidden fees, no surprises.

What North Holland Moves Typically Cost

Local move within Amsterdam: 1.5–2.5 hours (longer due to access challenges).

Local move within other North Holland cities (Haarlem, Alkmaar, Zaandam): 1.5–2 hours.

Short metropolitan move (e.g. Amsterdam → Amstelveen, Amsterdam → Zaandam): 1.5–2.5 hours.

Medium intercity (e.g. Amsterdam → Haarlem, Amsterdam → Hoofddorp): 2–3 hours.

Northern routes (e.g. Amsterdam → Alkmaar, Hoorn → Den Helder): 2.5–4 hours.

Two-bedroom apartment within Amsterdam: 3–4 hours.

Amsterdam moves typically cost more than equivalent moves in Rotterdam, Utrecht, or Den Haag — not because of pricing differences, but because access conditions in Amsterdam (steep staircases, restricted parking, narrow streets) genuinely take more time to navigate. The hourly rate is the same; the duration is longer.

Why Amsterdam Moves Take Longer — and Cost More

Amsterdam is the most demanding moving environment in the Netherlands. Anyone who has lived in the city understands why, but it is worth being explicit because it directly affects move time and cost.

Canal-house staircases. Buildings in the Centrum, Jordaan, De Pijp, and Oud-Zuid often have staircases that are unusually steep and narrow — sometimes called "Dutch staircases" or "trap." Loading items down these staircases takes longer than navigating modern apartment buildings. The driver loads from your apartment door, but the staircase access shapes the entire move.

Restricted parking. The Amsterdam centre is a paid parking zone with strict enforcement. Many streets only allow short-term loading. Some areas require a temporary parking permit (laden-en-lossen ontheffing) which takes 1–3 working days to arrange.

Time-limited loading zones. Specific streets allow vehicle stopping only during certain hours. This affects scheduling — a 9am move is often easier than an 11am move because of when loading is permitted.

Narrow streets. Some Amsterdam streets are too narrow for a moving van to comfortably stop. The driver may need to park further from the building entrance, which means longer walking distance for each item.

Building rules. Many Amsterdam buildings (particularly housing associations and newer complexes) have specific moving day rules: elevator booking required, designated loading times, specific entrances to use.

The Rotterdam/Utrecht/Den Haag equivalent moves are typically 30–60 minutes faster because none of these conditions apply at the same intensity. We are upfront about this with Amsterdam customers — the rate is the same, but the realistic time estimate is longer.

Moves to and from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

The Amsterdam metropolitan area is one of the most active moving corridors in the Netherlands. The pattern is bidirectional: people move out of Amsterdam to find affordable housing, and people move into Amsterdam for work and study.

Outbound moves from Amsterdam:

Amsterdam → Amstelveen (international families, expat housing, schools)

Amsterdam → Haarlem (cultural appeal, beach proximity, more space)

Amsterdam → Zaandam (significantly cheaper, 20-minute commute)

Amsterdam → Almere (Flevoland province, but a major Amsterdam overflow corridor)

Amsterdam → Purmerend (commuter town)

Amsterdam → Hoofddorp (Schiphol corridor, family-friendly suburbs)

Inbound moves to Amsterdam:

Haarlem → Amsterdam (UvA students, young professionals)

Amstelveen → Amsterdam (university age, lifestyle change)

Almere → Amsterdam (job change, central living)

Hilversum → Amsterdam (media industry rotation)

Other Dutch cities → Amsterdam (intercity moves from across the country)

Each of these corridors is a single-trip job at €49/hour. The same outbound and inbound moves between Rotterdam and other South Holland cities have similar dynamics, but North Holland's hub-and-spoke geography centres entirely on Amsterdam.

Who Moves with MoverMate in North Holland

Amsterdam expats and international students. Around 200,000 international residents live in Amsterdam. UvA, VU Amsterdam, and HvA bring tens of thousands of international students. English-friendly moving service is essential for this segment, and it is one of the largest customer profiles in our network.

Young professionals consolidating between cities. The classic Amsterdam-Amstelveen, Amsterdam-Haarlem, or Amsterdam-Zaandam corridor. Moving in with a partner, finding a more affordable apartment, switching to a quieter suburb.

Students at UvA, VU, and HvA. Amsterdam student housing is famously tight. Students move frequently between rooms, between shared apartments, between Amsterdam and other cities for studies or internships.

Hilversum-Amsterdam corridor commuters. Media industry professionals, creative workers, journalists. The Mediapark cluster in Hilversum draws constant movement from Amsterdam.

International families in Amstelveen. Drawn by the International School Amsterdam, the Japanese and Indian schools, and the broader expat community. Moves often involve overseas relocations or transitions to other European cities.

Haarlem creative class. Designers, illustrators, freelancers. Haarlem's character and proximity to Amsterdam draw a specific demographic that moves between the two cities frequently.

Standard residential moves across the province. Families upsizing in Hoofddorp, retirees downsizing in Alkmaar, students arriving in Hoorn for HBO programmes.

Out-of-Province Routes - North Holland to the Rest of the Netherlands

We also handle moves crossing North Holland's borders into and out of neighbouring provinces:

To Flevoland (Almere, Lelystad): the busiest corridor. Amsterdam → Almere is 25 minutes — practically a metropolitan move despite the provincial boundary.

To South Holland (Den Haag, Rotterdam, Leiden, Delft): Amsterdam → Den Haag is 50 minutes. Amsterdam → Rotterdam is 45 minutes.

To Utrecht province (Utrecht, Amersfoort): Amsterdam → Utrecht is 35 minutes. Hilversum → Utrecht is 20 minutes.

To Friesland and Groningen (long routes): less common but available. Amsterdam → Groningen is 2 hours. Amsterdam → Leeuwarden is 1h 45 min.

Same hourly rate everywhere. No cross-province surcharges. Fuel calculated on actual driving distance.
