Contracts are short, the centre is small and expensive, and people move more often here than almost anywhere else in the Netherlands. Because the city churns. Utrecht has short lease cycles, a small and expensive centre, and a rental market where a lot of housing is explicitly temporary — tijdelijke huurcontracten, anti-kraak arrangements, sublets and rooms let for a fixed number of months.

That produces a specific pattern we see repeatedly here. Someone stores between two contracts, moves in, and then eighteen months later has the same gap again with the same belongings. It is not carelessness; it is what the market does to people.

Two practical things follow. First, tell us if you have stored with us before — we already know roughly what you have, which makes the estimate faster and the collection slot easier to size. Second, if you suspect this will happen again, keep the packing. Boxes that survived one storage round survive the next, and having them flat in a cupboard is worth an hour of your life the following time.

We also keep the photographed item list from each booking, so a repeat collection starts from a known baseline rather than from scratch.

This is the question to settle before anything else, because Utrecht restricts vehicles more tightly than the other cities we collect from.

Outside the centre it is far easier. Wittevrouwen, Oudwijk and Lombok are dense nineteenth-century terraces with limited kerb space but no access restriction. Leidsche Rijn, Kanaleneiland, Overvecht and Lunetten are modern and straightforward, usually with parking outside the door and a lift in the taller blocks.

Young professionals between rentals. The largest group here, and the reason Utrecht skews older than Delft. Utrecht's central location makes it a default base for people working across the Randstad, and the rental market they face turns over fast.

People on temporary contracts. Tijdelijke huurcontracten and anti-kraak arrangements come with end dates that are not negotiable and rarely align with the next place.

Couples merging or separating households. Two sets of furniture and one flat, or the reverse. Both produce a surplus that needs to go somewhere for a few months while things settle.

People moving out of the centre. Utrecht's centre is small and expensive per square metre, and a lot of people eventually trade it for Leidsche Rijn or somewhere outside the city. That transition often involves a gap.
