Overijssel is a province defined by its name — "across the IJssel," the river that gives the province its identity and its western edge. Around 1.2 million people live here, distributed across a landscape that shifts from medieval river-port cities to industrial Twente to wetland national parks in the north. Unlike provinces dominated by a single capital, Overijssel has two distinct urban poles: the IJssel cities (Zwolle, Deventer, Kampen) along the western edge, and the Twente cluster (Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo) in the east near the German border.

Overijssel is the seventh-largest province by population and the fourth-largest by area in the Netherlands. The capital is Zwolle (around 132,000 residents), but the largest city is Enschede (around 162,000). That split — capital vs largest city — reflects the broader structure of the province: instead of a single metropolitan centre, Overijssel has two distinct regional clusters that operate almost independently.

The western cluster centres on the IJssel river. Zwolle, Deventer, and Kampen were among the most important Hanseatic trading cities in the medieval Netherlands — wealthy river ports that rivalled Amsterdam before the Golden Age shifted commerce westward. Today these cities retain remarkable medieval centres, established residential populations, and the position as Overijssel's connection to the rest of the country. Zwolle is one of the busiest railway junctions in the Netherlands, with direct services in every direction.

The eastern cluster, Twente, has a different character entirely. Enschede, Hengelo, and Almelo form a continuous urban region near the German border. Twente was historically the textile capital of the Netherlands, then reinvented itself around technology — anchored by the University of Twente (the only campus university in the Netherlands) and the Kennispark technology cluster. Twente's cultural ties to North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany are stronger than its connections to Holland, and cross-border life is normal here.

Between these two clusters lie smaller cities and rural regions: Salland (the agricultural heartland with Raalte and Olst), the Vechtdal (along the Vecht river with Hardenberg and Ommen), and the Kop van Overijssel (the wetlands and historic towns of the northwest, including Steenwijk and the famous canal-village Giethoorn). Moving in Overijssel is fundamentally shaped by which cluster you are in or moving between. The two halves of the province operate on different rhythms.

The IJssel cities (Zwolle, Deventer, Kampen). Medieval centres, narrow inner streets, paid centre parking. Outside the historic cores, the cities open up into modern post-war suburbs with easy van access. Zwolle's Stadshagen and Deventer's Colmschate are typical examples — wide streets, free parking, modern family housing. The IJssel cities are 25 minutes from each other and tightly connected by rail and motorway.

The Twente cluster (Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo). A continuous urban region where the three cities essentially function as one metropolitan area. Enschede to Hengelo is 10 minutes. Hengelo to Almelo is 15 minutes. People live in one Twente city and work in another routinely. Housing is more affordable here than in the IJssel cities, especially in Almelo. Cross-border movement to Germany (Gronau, Nordhorn) is also part of normal life.

Between the clusters. Zwolle to Enschede is 1 hour. Deventer to Enschede is 50 minutes. These routes are less frequent than within-cluster moves but still common — particularly for students switching between Saxion campuses (Deventer and Enschede) or professionals relocating between the IJssel and Twente economies.

This dual-cluster structure means a single Overijssel pricing model cannot capture the moving experience here — you really are choosing between two different geographies. The hourly rate stays at €49, but the actual move profile differs significantly between an Enschede-Hengelo run and a Zwolle-Deventer run.

The base rate is €49 per hour for the van and driver. Fuel costs are calculated separately based on actual driving distance. No regional surcharges. The rate applies whether the move is within Zwolle or between Zwolle and Enschede.

The Twente intra-cluster routes are among the shortest intercity moves in our network. The IJssel-to-Twente routes (Zwolle ↔ Enschede 1 hour) are among the longest within a single Dutch province.

The most distinctive moving environment in Overijssel is the Twente cluster. Enschede (162,000), Hengelo (82,000), and Almelo (74,000) form a continuous urban region of around 318,000 residents in a triangle 20 kilometres across. The cities operate almost as a single metropolitan area: people live in Almelo, work in Enschede, shop in Hengelo, and barely think about which municipality they are in.

For moves, this produces specific patterns:

Enschede ↔ Hengelo (10 min) is one of the most common intercity routes we drive in Overijssel. Students, young professionals, and families move between the two cities depending on housing availability and job locations. The University of Twente sits between Enschede and Hengelo geographically, blurring the boundary further.

Hengelo ↔ Almelo (15 min) is the affordability route. Almelo has the cheapest housing in Twente. Hengelo has more amenities and a better location for commuting. Many people start in Almelo and move to Hengelo as careers progress, or move from Hengelo to Almelo to save on rent.

Enschede ↔ Almelo (20 min) is the longest Twente intra-cluster route. Still short by Dutch standards. Common for student moves between the University of Twente and ROC of Twente affiliates in Almelo.

Cross-border to Gronau and Nordhorn. Twente residents routinely cross into Germany for shopping, work, or living. Some moves involve actual cross-border addresses. We handle these on a case-by-case basis.

The three Hanseatic cities along the IJssel form Overijssel's other distinctive cluster. Britannica notes that "in medieval times its Hanseatic towns—Kampen, Deventer, and Zwolle—were among the most important in the Netherlands, until the ascendancy of Amsterdam about 1500." That heritage shapes how the cities feel today and how moves work in them.

Zwolle. The capital. 132,000 residents. Major railway junction with direct intercity services to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Enschede, and beyond. Modern residential expansion in Stadshagen contrasts with the medieval Binnenstad. Zwolle is the most-connected city in Overijssel for inter-province moves.

Deventer. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands tradition, with city rights since 956. Hanseatic port. Saxion University of Applied Sciences campus. Distinctive Bergkwartier medieval district. Sits at the third point of the Stedendriehoek (City Triangle) with Apeldoorn and Zutphen across the Gelderland border.

Kampen. Smaller (around 54,000 residents) but historically significant — over 500 registered historical monuments, fortified medieval city gates, a 17th-century shipping fleet that once rivalled Amsterdam's. Modern Kampen sits across the IJssel from Zwolle, connected by short bridges and a 15-minute drive.

The Zwolle-Deventer-Kampen triangle generates moderate move volume — less than the Twente cluster because the population is smaller, but consistent given the established residential populations and the cross-cluster commuting pattern with Apeldoorn (Stedendriehoek).

To Germany (cross-border Twente region): Enschede → Gronau is 15 minutes. Hengelo → Nordhorn is 35 minutes.

University of Twente students and staff. 12,000 students at the only campus university in the Netherlands, plus thousands more across Saxion's Enschede campus and ArtEZ. Around 4,500 international students arrive in Enschede each year. UT campus housing has specific access rules we handle routinely.

Saxion students across Deventer and Enschede. Saxion's two main campuses generate cross-cluster student moves. A student starting at Saxion Deventer who transfers to Enschede needs the longest intra-province move (50 min, €132–€187).

Windesheim students in Zwolle. Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle serves the IJssel cluster.

Tech professionals at Kennispark and the Twente technology corridor. The University of Twente's Kennispark hosts dozens of technology companies. International talent moves into the Twente cluster, often starting in Enschede and later relocating within the cluster.

XL Businesspark Almelo employees. The XL Businesspark hosts major international companies including Timberland, Bleckmann, and ViVoChem. Many international workers settle in Almelo for affordability while working at XL.

Cross-border German workers. Twente residents working in Gronau, Nordhorn, or further into North Rhine-Westphalia. Many live in Almelo or Enschede for the lower Dutch housing costs while commuting east.

Hanseatic city families and professionals. Established residential populations in Zwolle's Stadshagen, Deventer's Colmschate, and Kampen's residential areas. Move patterns here are family-driven rather than student-driven.

Randstad arrivals. Professionals leaving Amsterdam, Utrecht, or Rotterdam for affordability and quality of life in Zwolle, Deventer, or the Twente cluster.
