Den Haag is where MoverMate is based. This is the Den Haag problem, and it is the reason a lot of people here end up storing.

Den Haag has an unusually large share of furnished and short-stay rentals, because the housing market has organised itself around people arriving on fixed-term contracts. That is convenient when you land with two suitcases. It is a real problem when you already own a bed, a desk, a sofa and a bookcase, and the flat you have just signed for comes with all of those already in it.

The usual options are all lossy. Selling everything means buying it again in a year at full price. Asking the landlord to remove the existing furniture works occasionally and usually costs something. Cramming your own things into a spare room defeats the point of renting a place that size.

Storing it is the cheap answer. A room's worth is €15 a week, so a year of holding onto your own furniture while you live somewhere furnished is €780 — less than replacing a bed, a sofa and a wardrobe once, and you keep the things you actually chose. We collect from the old flat, store it, and deliver it to wherever you land when the furnished period ends.

More often here than anywhere else, because we are already in the city.

In most places we ask for a week. In Den Haag the van does not have to travel to reach you, so a two- or three-day turnaround is normal and same-week collection is frequently possible. If you message in the morning about something urgent, there is a genuine chance of a slot that week.

That matters more than it sounds, because storage decisions are usually made late. People do not plan to need storage — they discover the new place is not ready, or the handover date moves, or a posting gets extended, and suddenly there is a gap that did not exist a fortnight ago. Being able to solve that in three days rather than ten is the practical difference.

The honest caveat: the end of the month is the exception. Contracts across the whole city turn over on the 1st, and the last three days of any month fill up regardless of how close we are. If your date is fixed to a month end, book it as far ahead as you can.

€15 a week for a room load — a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe contents and 10 to 15 boxes. €30 a week for a studio or one-bedroom flat — bed, table, appliances and 20 to 30 boxes. Two-week minimum, no deposit, no admin fee, nothing to pay when your things come back out.

Collection and redelivery are separate jobs at €49 an hour with a 1.5-hour minimum, plus transport. In Den Haag that is normally just the minimum — €73.50 each way — provided your things are ready when we arrive.

Storage is a rental. It never stops costing, so at some point the running total passes what the contents are worth. For a room of IKEA-grade furniture, that crossover is somewhere around eight months to a year. For things you would actually miss — a good mattress, inherited furniture, a proper desk, anything you spent real money on — it takes far longer, and storing is usually the better call.

A rough way to decide. Add up what it would cost to replace everything you are thinking of storing. Divide by €15 a week for a room or €30 for a studio. If the answer is more months than you expect to be away, store it. If it is fewer, sell it and buy again.

Things that almost always beat storage: cheap flat-pack shelving, a mattress past its best, a desk you never liked. Things that almost never do: anything sentimental, anything solid wood, bikes, and the accumulated small stuff that took two years to acquire and would take another two to replace.

People on fixed-term institutional contracts. Den Haag runs on them — the ministries, the international courts, the OPCW, Europol and a large NGO and embassy sector. Contracts are often one to three years, frequently tied to a case, a mandate or a rotation, and they end on a known date. That produces exactly the sort of planned, medium-length storage need this service is built around.

People moving into furnished flats. As above — the biggest single reason we get storage messages from Den Haag rather than from anywhere else.

Diplomatic and embassy staff between postings. Rotations rarely align neatly with lease dates, and people leaving the country for a few months are not usually ready to liquidate a household.

Students at The Hague University and Leiden's Den Haag campus. Smaller volumes, shorter gaps, mostly around the semester boundaries.

People trading a Den Haag flat for something else in the Randstad. Often storing for a few weeks while the new place is finished or the handover date settles.

The storage price is the same everywhere. What varies slightly is loading time: the older districts near the centre and the coast have narrower streets and less kerb space than the newer developments out towards Ypenburg and Leidschenveen, where the van generally parks outside the door. Tell us the street and the floor when you book and we will say if we expect more than the minimum.

Two or three days' notice is usually workable here. The exception is the end of the month, when the whole city moves at once. If you are storing for a long posting and the end date is still uncertain, book the collection anyway and leave the return open; storage is billed by the week and there is no penalty for not knowing yet.
