Leiden Storage — For When You Don't Know the Date Yet
MoverMate stores belongings collected in Leiden for €15 a week for a room load and €30 a week for a studio or one-bedroom flat, with a two-week minimum. We come to your address with our own van and driver, take everything away, and bring it back when you need it. Collection and redelivery are billed at €49 an hour with a 1.5-hour minimum, plus transport.
Most people booking storage know both dates. In Leiden, a lot of people know neither. The housing here runs on hospiteeravonden, SSH waiting lists and rooms that come up at a week's notice, which means you often have to move your things out long before you have any idea where they are going. That is the situation this page is written for: you can book a collection without naming a delivery date. Storage is billed by the week, so you pay for what you use and tell us the address when you have one.
MoverMate is NIWO-licensed and has completed more than 800 moves. Everything runs on WhatsApp in English. For how the service works generally, see short-term storage; for moving rather than storing, see the Leiden moving service.
Can I book storage without knowing when I want it back?
You give us a collection date, which you usually do know — a contract end, a notice period, a flight. You leave the return open. We collect, photograph and list everything, and hold it. Storage runs at €15 a week for a room load from the day we collect, with no end date required and no maximum.
There is no extension fee, because there is nothing to extend. If it turns out to be three weeks, you pay for three weeks. If the room search drags into a second month, you pay for that instead. Nothing renews, nothing needs renegotiating, and you are not penalised for the thing you cannot control.
The only figure that is fixed is the two-week minimum, which applies whether you end up needing two weeks or two days. Everything after that is simply weeks used.
How fast can you deliver once I have a room?
This is the part that matters on this route, because in Leiden the address usually arrives with very little warning.
A hospiteeravond can end with you getting the room that night. An SSH offer can come with a short window to accept. Either way, you go from no address to needing your things at an address in a couple of days — and that is the opposite of how most storage works, where the delivery is planned weeks ahead and the collection is the rushed part.
Message us the moment you have the address, even before you have the keys. We can usually deliver within a few days, and often sooner if the new place is in Leiden or nearby. We are based in Den Haag, about twenty minutes away.
Two things that make it faster. Tell us at collection roughly when you might need everything, even if it is a guess — it helps us keep your lot somewhere sensible. And if you are viewing rooms, tell us the neighbourhoods you are looking at, so we already know the shape of the delivery before you win one.
The one period where short notice is genuinely hard is late August into early September, when the whole city moves at once.
Where do your things go before you have a Dutch address?
A specific Leiden situation, and one most storage services are not set up for: you are arriving from abroad and your belongings land before your housing does.
Leiden University has one of the largest international intakes in the country, and the housing shortage means a significant number of people arrive with a temporary arrangement — a hotel, a sublet, a friend's floor, three weeks in an Airbnb — and a shipment or a car full of things with nowhere to put them. Storage here is not the gap between two homes. It is the gap before the first one.
We can collect from wherever your things currently are, including a short-stay address, a hotel, or a relative's house elsewhere in the Randstad, and hold everything until your room comes through. You do not need a permanent address to book, and you do not need to know the eventual one.
If you are moving to Leiden from elsewhere in the Netherlands rather than from abroad, the intercity moving service covers the transport side and we can combine it with storage in one booking.
Collecting from a hospita house or a shared student house
A lot of Leiden rooms sit inside somebody else's house, and that changes the collection more than the street does.
If you rent from a hospita, the front door, the hallway and sometimes the staircase are shared with the people who live there. Turning up unannounced with a van and carrying a wardrobe through a family's hallway on a Saturday morning is not a good way to leave. The same applies in a shared student house where five other people are asleep.
What to do: agree a time with whoever else lives there before you book, and tell us that window. A late-morning or early-afternoon slot is usually easiest for everyone. If the hospita has rules about the front door being propped, the hallway being kept clear, or shoes and floors, pass them on and we will work to them.
We load at street level, if elevator is missing, so bring your things down to the door in advance.
Collections work across the whole city: the Binnenstad and Pieterswijk, the Boerhaavedistrict, Leiden Noord, Merenwijk, Stevenshof, Roomburg and the area around the Bio Science Park, plus Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten, Katwijk and Sassenheim.
How do I book storage in Leiden?
Send a WhatsApp message to +31 6 48 85 21 48 with three things: your Leiden address including the floor, roughly what you want stored, and the date you need it collected. You do not need a return date.
You get a price the same hour — the weekly storage rate plus the van cost. We come on the agreed date, go through the items with you, and send a photographed list before driving off, so there is a record of exactly what went in. That matters more here than usual, because your things may sit for a while and you may be somewhere else while they do.
When a room comes through, message us the address. We confirm a delivery slot, usually within a few days.
Four or five days' notice for a collection is comfortable. The exceptions are the end of the month and the last two weeks of August, when Leiden's housing turns over almost entirely and everything fills up.
